French Navy Admiral. He entered the French Navy at age eleven, and rose to Admiral in a career that spanned over fifty years. His best known action was as commander of the French naval force that came to the aide of rebelling Americans during the Revolutionary War. He directed his fleet in the September 5, 1781 Battle of the Chesapeake, where the French defeated a force of British ships sent to relieve the Siege of Yorktown, Virginia, where Continental forces under General George Washington had surrounded the British Army under Lieutenant General Charles Cornwallis. The decisive victory over the British ensured that no help would come to General Cornwallis, who capitulated to General Washington the next month. In 1978 the United States navy honored him with the commissioning of "Spruance"-class destroyer "USS Comte de Grasse" (DD-974).
