Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Served during the Civil War as a Private in Company A, 1st Vermont Volunteer Cavalry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at the Battle of Cedar Creek, Virginia on October 19, 1864. His citation reads “With one companion captured the State flag of a North Carolina regiment, together with 3 officers and an ambulance with its mules and driver”. His Medal was issued a few days after the action, on October 26, 1864. He was one of four 1st Vermont Cavalry soldiers to be awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during the Civil War (the others being Corporal Frederick A. Lyon, Major William Wells, and Sergeant Eri D. Woodbury).
