Kansas Governor, U.S. Senator. Learning the art of printing, he became a newspaper publisher, eventually owning several newspapers and two radio stations. He was president of the board of regents for the Kansas Agricultural College, (1910-13). In 1914, he was elected as a Republican the 20th Governor of Kansas, serving until 1919. While in office, he was also chairman of the National Governor’s Association. After his term, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving (1919-49). After retiring from the Senate, he continued the newspaper publishing business until his death at age 86.
