ELWOOD – H R Miller, 85, Elwood, passed away on Dec. 16, 2010 at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis following an extended illness.
He was born on Sept. 7, 1925 to Russell and Helen (Rodgers) Miller in Lebanon.
H R married Mary Elizabeth (Bradley) on Nov. 7, 1947. She passed away on Jan. 7, 2010.
He was a Veteran serving in W.W.II in the US Army-Air Force.
H R was a retired sixth grade school teacher from the Elwood Community School Corporation, teaching at Washington and Edgewood Elementary schools.
H R was a member of the Rigdon Church of Christ, lifetime member of the American Legion, and Amvets, Indiana State Teachers Association and the Indiana State Retired School Teachers Association.
H R was a master gardener and a member of the Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky Gord Society, Indiana Bee Keepers, Indiana Seed Savers, Pendleton, Alexandria, Anderson and Tipton Garden Clubs. He has grown the largest Persimmon Garden north of Indianapolis.
H R had received many awards for gardening and was a recipient of the Honeywell award given by Purdue University.
H R loved children and for many years he presented several scholarships to the elementary schools for Americanism, Citizenship and the American Legion Awards. In the high school, he awarded the H R Miller Continuing Education Scholarship for many years.
For 47 years, he read the roll call for the Memorial Day Services at the cemetery for all the veterans.
He is survived by his special family and care giver, Jean Edwards of Elwood; a son, John and Cathy Miller of Pittsboro; four daughters, Debbie and Tom Justison of Anderson, Rebecca Shelby of Indianapolis, Dinah and John Fuller of Bloomfield and Anna and Hank Wolfe of Milltown; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Jack Miller of Lebanon, Sam Bob Miller of Lebanon and Bill Miller of St. Clairsville, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
Along with his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Otto Miller and a sister, Helen Mabel King.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Dunnichay Funeral Home in Elwood.
Funeral services will be at 5 p.m. Sunday, also at the funeral home. H R's brother Sam Bob Miller will be officiating.
Private burial will take place at a later date with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Elwood Elementary School.
