Automotive Pioneer, Engineer, Industrialist. With his lifelong partner Wilhelm Maybach, he invented the first fast-running petrol engine (1885). A smaller version of this engine was used later that year to create the first true motorcycle. In 1886, they built from a carriage the first four-wheel power driven vehicle with a combustion engine. The motor was also used in boats, trolleys, and airships. The Daimler-Motorengesellschaft was established in 1890 in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt and grew into a worldwide concern. They sold their first automobile in 1892. A Daimler automobile won the gasoline-powered section of the first true auto race: the 1894 Paris to Rouen race. In 1926 the company was merged with Benz & Cie. into Daimler-Benz AG, makers of Mercedes-Benz and Maybach automobiles, which is still operating today. A sketch Daimler drew showing the three main uses he forsaw for his motors--land, water, and air--eventually became the world-famous Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star. He was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 1978. From 1993 to 2008, the main stadium in Stuttgart, a venue for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, was named after him (it is now called the Mercedes-Benz Stadium).
