Ann Hershman, of Lebanon, Indiana , was currently residing with her son in South Bend, IN, while undergoing cancer treatment. She passed away at Memorial Hospital, South Bend, Indiana. She was born in Rochester, NY, the first of the children of the late Rev. Melvin R. and Carolyn (Beckner) Phillips. She has lived in Lebanon, IN since 1992, coming from Indianapolis, IN. She graduated from Anderson (Indiana) High School in 1963, and later earned her master's degree from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. Ann retired in 2010, as a high school teacher for Indianapolis Public Schools, where she worked for over 30 years. In August 1969, she married James D. Leachman in Jamestown, New York. James died on October 15, 1983. In 1991, she married John W. Hershman in Indianapolis, Indiana. He died in August 2007. She is survived by her daughter, Carol Nienaber of Lebanon, IN; her son, Martin (Angela) Leachman of South Bend, IN; three grandchildren, Alexander and Elizabeth Leachman of South Bend, IN; Emma Nienaber of Lebanon, IN; two sisters, Ruth Phillips of Fort Wayne, IN; Beth (William) Hennessy of Buffalo, NY; and one brother, Ralph (Margarete) Phillips of Munich, Germany. Ann was a member of the First Baptist Church in Indianapolis, IN and was a founding member of Congregation of the Covenants in Indianapolis, IN. A memorial service was be held January 15, 2011 at the First Baptist Church in Indianapolis, Indiana. Private interment of ashes in Parkersburg, WV. Kaniewski Funeral Home, South Bend, Indiana handled arrangements.
