Bert was born to Harlan and Emma (Shay) Pingrey in Knoxville, Illinois and moved with his brother Frank to Chico in 1907. He worked at odd jobs for awhile then began a career working for the Sacramento Northern Railroad as a brakeman and conductor at times.
His hobby was woodworking and he enjoyed community envolvement. He loved people and it showed in everthing he did.
Bert was active in his community as a boy scout leader, and an active church leader. He was a Chico Fireman voluteer throughout the early 1900's. First Sergeant Bert Pingrey was a lifelong member of the California National Guard and participated in the Boarder War with Mexico. During WW II he was a 2nd Lt. and Commanding Officer of the California State Guard at the Chico Army Airfield.
