US Politician. A lawyer in New York, William Thayer moved to Oregon in 1862 to practice law with a brother. Lived for a time in Lewiston, Idaho and served as District Attorney for the Idaho Territory in 1866, and from 1866?67 served a session in the Idaho Territorial House of Representatives. Back in Oregon, he was elected Governor of the State of Oregon in 1878 and served a single term. This was followed by a seat on the State Supreme Court, and from 1888 to 1890 was the Chief Justice.
