Obituary as shown in the June 2, 1910 Greensboro Daily News:
"Mount Airy, June 1--The funeral services of H.M. Ashburn, the Southern Railway brakeman who lost his life while coupling cars at Pilot Mountain, was conducted at the home of the deceased by the Rev. G.C. Haymore, in this city, after which the remains were carried to New Hope church, near the old home of Mr. Ashburn near Ararat for burial. This was one of the saddest services perhaps ever held in Mount Airy, and was attended by a great number of people. The sympathy of hundreds went out to the heartbroken young wife and little fatherless child."
