Doris J. Hampton Abbott, 79, died quietly at home after a three year battle with ovarian cancer.
Born in Portage, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Samuel J and Elinor Truth Hampton.
During her childhood, Doris and her family moved to Detroit, Michigan where her father sold Graham-Paige automobiles. She was educated in Detroit schools and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology at Michigan State College (now Michigan State University). During World War II,
Doris joined thousands of other young ‘Rosie the Riveters' supporting the war effort by assembling manifolds for B-24 Bombers at the Ford-Lincoln Motor Company in Detroit.
While at Michigan State, her brother Sam introduced her to his roommate, Russell Abbott. After a year and a half of courtship the two became engaged in June 1946 and married March 22, 1947. On their wedding day, Doris wore a gown especially designed and sewn for her by her mother. After graduation, the couple moved to Bangor where Doris directed laboratory operations at Dow Air Force Base Hospital, while Russell began practicing veterinary medicine.
In 1948 they relocated to Ash Point and subsequently to Rockland, establishing the Rockland Animal Hospital, where Doris served as office manager, bookkeeper and lab technician for 34 years.
Doris was member and past-president of the Rho Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi cultural sorority; member and past-president of the former auxiliary to the Maine Veterinary Medical Association, former president of Rockland Lady Lions, representative to the Maine Seafoods Festival steering committee, former member and clerk of Pratt Memorial Methodist Church.
A devout member of Owls Head Baptist Church from 1981 until her death; Doris served for many years in the church choir, was former Chairwoman of the Christian Education Committee, served as Chairwoman of Missionary Committee several times; and was president of Dorcas Missionary Circle for 16 years. Mrs. Abbott was active in many organizations over the years including, member of American Baptist Churches of Maine Macedonia Ministry team, and for several years, served on the state steering committee of this ministry. She was one of only eleven people chosen by the American Baptist Churches USA National Ministries to participate in a Macedonia ministry trip to churches in Havant, Hampshire, England, and Newport and Wellow on the Isle of Wight. Doris also served as immediate past-president of the Lincoln Association, American Baptist Women's Ministry for the past six years.
Shortly before her death, Mrs. Abbott noted that "her spiritual gift was the gift of service and that doing for others was her joy and privilege." Her greatest joy was her family. She considered it her privilege to help care for all of her grandchildren, especially Jessica, Cassandra and Justin of Owls Head during their pre-school years. Her family and friends will fondly remember Doris as a tireless worker, trusted friend, selfless giver, devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was an inspiring Christian whose devotion, strength and faith continued to grow through her illness and in her final days.
Mrs. Abbott is survived by her husband of 57 years, Dr. Russell Abbott; one son Randall of Haddonfield, Camden County, New Jersey; two daughters, Sharlene Schwalbenberg and her husband, Richard of Scarborough, Cumberland County, Maine; Suzanne Philbrook and her husband James of Owls Head, Knox County, Maine; eight grandchildren, Sarah and Jamieson Abbott, Meghan, Andrew and Marc Schwalbenberg, Jessica, Cassandra, and Justin Philbrook; and one brother Samuel J. Hampton, Jr. of Portage, Cambria County, Pennsylvania.
Reverends Harold W. Carpenter and Richard Reynolds officiated. Interment at Ash Point Cemetery, Owls Head.
