Actress. She is best remembered for creating the role of 'Sally Bowles' on Broadway in the 1966 musical "Cabaret." Born Valerie Jill Haworth to a family of wealth, she was raised in Sussex and originally trained in ballet. After dancing at Sadler's Wells Jill made her silver screen bow as Sal Mineo's Jewish girlfriend in Otto Preminger's 1960 classic "Exodus," had roles in three French movies, most notably as prostitute Fleur de Marie in 1962's "The Mysteries of Paris," made the covers of some film magazines, and was in a particularly remembered 1963 episode of "Outer Limits." Jill appeared in "The Cardinal" (1963) and was Navy Nurse Annalee Dorne who commits suicide after being raped by Kirk Douglas' character, Eddington, in the 1964 epic "In Harm's Way," then beat out 200 other girls (including Liza Minelli) for the part of singer Sally Bowles in the November 20, 1966, world premiere of "Cabaret" opposite Joel Grey and Jack Gilford; though her performance was mostly well received she was not nominated for a Tony Award nor was she asked to reprise her starring role for the 1972 film. She earned a number of credits on American television including "Rawhide," "Mission: Impossible," "Bonanza," "Baretta," "Vega$," and "The F.B.I.," but by the late 1960s her star status had lessened. Though Jill was to maintain New York as her home from 1967 to the end of her life she did return to England occasionally for work where she did voice-overs and appeared in such forgettable low-budget horror films as 1967's "It!," "The Haunted House of Horror" (1969), and the 1974 "Mutations." She lived quietly, giving her final screen performance as Mrs. Richards in 2001's comedy "Mergers & Acquisitions."
