Ellen Maria Wade was born at Andover, Ohio on July 26, 1836. She married Speaker of US House of Representatives, Schuyler Colfax on November 18, 1868. In the Presidential Election of 1868, Republican Presidential candidate Ulysses Simpson Grant was urged by Republicans to select US Senator for Ohio, Benjamin Franklin Wade as VP running mate. Instead Grant chose Speaker Colfax as VP running mate. Coincidentally Colfax married Wade's niece, Ellen Maria Wade, shortly after winning the 1868. Their child, Schuyler Washington Colfax III, was born on April 11, 1870. He became the youngest ever Mayor of South Bend, Indiana, with Mayor Pete Buttigieg becoming second youngest Mayor of South Bend on January 1, 2012. Ellen Maria Colfax died at South Bend aged 74 on March 4, 1911.
