U.S. Congressman. During World War I, he served as a Sergeant the 123rd Field Artillery, U.S. Army, (1917-19). After the war, he graduated from the University of Michigan, 1923 and taught school at Galena, Illinois. He then studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1930, practiced law in Galena, Illinois and was clerk of the circuit court of Jo Daviess County, (1930-32). In 1933, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-third Congress and to the next thirteen succeeding Congresses, serving until 1961. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he lived in retirement until his death at age 74.
