AN OLD SETTLER.

We were very much pleased Monday morning to receive a call from J. M. Goodspeed, of Little Prairie Ronde, Mich. Mr. Goodspeed was one of the earliest settlers here, having arrived early in the spring of 1857. He resided here until 1861, when he enlisted in Company B, ninth Kansas cavalry, with which he served until the close of the war, during which service he received a severe wound in the face.

He came back here after the war, but soon went to Michigan, where he became absorbed in business and did not return, which he now very much regrets. He is both pleased and greatly surprised at the growth of Emporia and the improvement of the surrounding country.

When Mr. Goodspeed left Michigan, on the 10th inst., there were ten to twelve inches of snow on the ground, and excellent sleighing. He says in his section of that state the people are using Kansas corn altogether, for which they pay sixty cents a bushel. He expects, also, that Michigan will have to rely on Kansas for fruits, as they have raised none there to speak of for several years. In a large orchard last year he only gathered half a bushel of imperfect apples.

All of his old acquaintances are glad to meet Mr. Goodspeed, and vote unanimously to have him become one of us again.
