Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served during the Civil War in Company G, 2nd Illinois Volunteer Light Artillery, being mustered in as a Corporal on September 5, 1861. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at the Battle of Nashville, Tennessee on December 15, 1864, with his citation reading "When the fire of the enemy's batteries compelled the men of his detachment for a short time to seek shelter, he stood manfully at his post and for some minutes worked his gun alone". He was promoted to Quartermaster Sergeant, and was honorably mustered out on September 4, 1865. He was awarded his Medal on January 20, 1897.
