Indian Wars Medal of Honor Recipient. An Irish immigrant, he was issued the award on August 26, 1876 for his actions as a corporal with Company A, 23rd US Infantry, US Army, on April 28, 1876, at Grace Creek near Fort Hartsuff, Nebraska. He was later promoted to the rank of sergeant. His Medal of Honor citation simply reads: "Gallantry in charge on hostile Sioux."
