Indian Wars Medal of Honor Recipient. A Scottish immigrant, he was issued the award under the name 'John Mott' on November 13, 1871, for his actions as a sergeant with Company F, 3rd US Cavalry, US Army, on May 5, 1871, at the Whetstone Mountains, Arizona Territory, while engaging with hostile Indian forces. His Medal of Honor citation simply reads: "Gallantry in action."
