U.S. Congressman. Born in Verona, New York, he moved to Wisconsin in 1851, attended Albion Academy, the University of Wisconsin, and engaged in agricultural pursuits. Entering politics, he became active in the support of pure food laws, became a member of the member of the Wisconsin Assembly, (1883-85) and was on the Wisconsin Board of Agriculture, (1887–95). He also held the offices of Wisconsin Superintendent of Public Property, (1889–91) and was Food and Dairy Commissioner (1898-02). In 1903, he waselected as a Republican to the Fifty-eighth and Fifty-ninth Congresses and served until his death at age 55 of intestinal illness in Chicago, Illinois.
