U.S. Congressman. As a young man, he moved to Bradford County, Pennsylvania and worked with his father in the lumber business. He moved to Minnesota, in 1856, was appointed deputy postmaster of Rochester in 1859 and entered the Middlebury Academy New York, in 1860. During the Civil War, he served as a Captain in command of the 3rd Minnesota Mounted Infantry Union Army and was commissary of subsistence by President Lincoln, in March of 1865. After the war, he engaged in banking, was a member of the Minnesota State House of Representatives (1882-86), served in the Minnesota State Senate (1886-90) and was president of the Minnesota State Board of Asylums for the Insane, (1882-88). Moving to Riverside, California, he engaged in horticultural pursuits and banking. In 1903, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-eighth Congress, serving until he resigned in 1905. He then resumed his occupation as horticulturist, until his death at age 76.
