U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He graduated from the University of Alabama, in 1914, from its law department in 1915, was admitted to the in 1916 and commenced to practice law at Montgomery, Alabama. During World War I, he served in the U.S. Army with the 17th and 21st U.S. Infantry Regiments. After the war, he was president of the Montgomery Board of Education, (1917-22). In 1923, he was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-eighth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of John R. Tyson, reelected to the Sixty-ninth Congress and to the next six succeeding Congresses, serving until 1938. After leaving Congress, he was appointed to the United States Senate, serving (1938-69). Not a candidate for reelection, he created the Hill Center at the National Institutes of Health. He received honorary degrees from thirteen colleges and universities and is a recipient of the Public Welfare Medal.
