RUSSELL — Leo R. Bristol, 80, Russell, died Friday at his home, where he was under the care of Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley. Mr. Bristol delivered milk for Sunnyside Dairy, Edwards, worked construction for his uncle at Aldrich Construction, Hermon, and retired from the operating engineers union after 30 years of service. At one time he also operated the DeKalb roller-skating rink.
Born June 14, 1928, in DePeyster, son of Charles and Vera Aldrich Bristol, he attended school in Heuvelton and served in the Navy during World War II. A marriage to Esther Dennee ended in divorce.
He was a past member and chief of Hermon Volunteer Fire Department and helped to organize the Hermon Volunteer Rescue Squad. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, gardening and raising dogs and horses.
Surviving are six sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael, Rodney "Rocky," Sidney and Tina, and Leo L., all of Russell, Carl, Canton, and Jeffrey, Potsdam; two daughters and a son-in-law, Carolyn and Thomas Mouthrop, Canton, and Vera Jena "Jeannie" Randall, Akron, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Lowena Bristol, Canton; 17 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, a niece and a nephew. An infant daughter, Sabrina Belmore, and infant sister, Keitha Bristol, two brothers, Alfred and Olen "Rip," and a great-grandchild died before him.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Green Funeral Home, Hermon, with Douglas L. Beachard, lay minister at Russell United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Flackville Cemetery. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Donations may be made to Hermon Volunteer Fire Department or Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley.
