Western Explorer. Born in Quebec, Canada, he was a key figure in the land-based fur trade of the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia during the first half of the nineteenth century. In the 1820s, he led expeditions throughout unexplored areas of the Rocky Mountains, Snake River Plain, the Great Basin, Willamette Valley and the Spanish missions of California. He also led trapping journeys through Utah to setup post primarily for exploitation of new trade for the Hudson's Bay Company. Ogden, Utah is named for him. In 1830, he was transferred to New Caledonia, British Columbia as chief factor of the District, where he established Fort Simpson. He explored regions of the north west through Oregon and Washington and returned to Fort Vancouver in 1845. He continued in position as chief of the Columbia District until his death.
