Alabama Governor. Moving to Alabama, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and proceeded to practice law in Huntsville, Alabama. With the advent of the Civil War, he opposed secession as a member of the Alabama Secession Convention, but signed the secession ordinance after it passed. In 1861, he was elected a Deputy to the Provisional Congress of the Confederate States, but resigned his seat when appointed a judge to the circuit court in 1863. He then served in the Confederate Army until the end of the war. After the war, he resumed his law practice. In 1872, he was elected as a Republican the 23rd Governor of Alabama, serving until 1874. During his term unsuccessful attempts were made to pass legislation for civil rights which would have barred discrimination on common carriers in hotels, schools and theaters. After leaving office, he returned to the practice of law until his death.
