U.S. Congressman. Moving with his parents to Alabama, in 1818, he taught school for several years, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1824 and commenced the practice of law in Linden, Alabama. He was judge of the Marengo County Court, a member of the Alabama State House of Representatives in 1837 and served in the Alabama State Senate, (1839-42). In 1849, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-first Congress, serving until 1851. After his term, he resumed the practice of law and again became a member of the State house of representatives, in 1855. He then retired from public life and lived on his plantation until his death at age 75.
