U.S. Congressman. After graduating from St. Patrick's Academy, he apprenticed in the hatter's trade and moved to Danbury, Connecticut, in 1887. There he was employed as a journeyman hatter and was treasurer of the United Hatters of North America, in 1897. He returned to his home town of Brooklyn, New York, in 1902 and continued in the hatter's trade. Entering politics, he was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-second Congress and to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving (1911-21). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he moved to New Jersey and was elected Mayor of Keansburg, in 1926. He also engaged in the real estate business until his death.
