Son of Nehemiah Getchell, Sr. and Anna Bragg. He was the 7th of their 8 children.

He served briefly as a Private in the Massachusetts (Maine) Militia during the War of 1812, as part of Capt. James L. Child's Company, Lt. Col. H. Moore's Regiment. He enlisted from Winslow, Maine in Sep 1814 and was discharged 2 weeks later. He served in the defense of Wiscasset, Maine. He, and his widow, later received a pension for this service.

He married Charlotte Spear on 18 Feb 1816 in Winslow, Maine. They had at least 10 children:
