Businessman. Born in Ontario, Canada, he moved to Los Angeles, California, in January 1896 and found a job with Arthur Letts, who had set up a dry goods store. Being located on Broadway Street, they called it "Broadway." The store prospered, and the opportunity to open a second store appeared in 1906. Among his executives, Mr. Letts selected John Bullock to manage it, allowing him to use his own name, and "Bullock's" was born as an upscale specialty store. In 1923, Bullock, with business partner P.G. Winnett, bought out Letts's interest. In September 1929, a second store was opened in a beautiful art-deco building west of downtown and called Bullock's-Wilshire. At the time of Bullock's death, the Bullocks Wilshire chain operated a full line of exclusive department stores all across California. He died at age 62 in Los Angeles, California.
