Funeral services for Willard F. Zessin, 85, of Madison, was held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 9, 2009, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison. Rev. Barry Williams will officiate. Burial was in the Crown Hill Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 35, VFW Post 5763, and the Nebraska National Guard Honor Guard. Visitation was held from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sept 8 at the Resseguie Funeral Home in Madison.
Mr. Zessin died Monday, August 31, 2009, at Faith Regional Health Services.
Willard was born on June 9, 1924, in Madison County, the son of William and Matilda (White) Zessin. He attended rural school and graduated from Madison High School.
On August 17, 1943, Willard entered the US Army. He served with the 132 Infantry in the Pacific Theater. He earned his honorable discharge on February 8, 1946.
Soon after his return, Willard married Lorraine Schaffer. They made their home on a farm west of Madison, where he was a farmhand for the Oshsner family. They later moved to Omaha where Willard worked for the Lux Body Shop. He was employed there for almost 10 years before returning to Madison.
He worked for Columbian Feeds before working for the Madison Body Shop. He had to retire from body work due to his health.
On September 21, 1963, Willard married Myrtle Helgerson in Yankton, SD. They made their home in Madison where he worked at Schroeders Tavern. He retired in 1987.
Willard was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was an active member of American Legion Post 35, and VFW Post 5763. He was an avid Husker and Chicago Cubs fan. He also enjoy horse racing.
He survived by two daughters and their spouses, Janet and Richard Brekenfeld, of Madison, and Bonnie and Eddie Doucette, of North Platte, NE, one son and his wife, Larry and Mary Ann Zessin, of Apache Junction, AZ; six grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren; one sister, Milda Ochsner, of Madison.
Willard was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Myrtle, and one brother, Ruben.
