Peter H. Zittle, a son of Mary Magdalena (née Hiestand) and Michael Zittle, senior, was born 1809 in Washington County, Maryland. He kept a wagon stand along the National Road on South Mountain, near Zittlestown, the village founded by his father. (Similar to a tavern, a wagon stand catered to the men and horses of freight wagons.) Census records also show him employed as a carpenter (1850), farmer (1860 and 1870), and grocer (1880).

Peter H. Zittle and Catherine Hutzell were married on 24 September 1833 in Washington County. The couple had five children who lived to maturity.*

"One mile west of South Mountain, Petter Zettle, a German, kept a tavern. It was a wagon stand, and a popular one. The house was of brick, and stood on the south side of the road. The old landlord was accustomed to join in the merry-making of the old wagoners, and as the jokes went around in the old bar room, the German spice was plainly discernible as well as agreeable, in unison with the familiar notes of the native pike boys." (Thomas B. Searight, The Old Pike: A History of the National Road (Uniontown, Penn.: the author, 1894), p. 196.)

"Mr. Peter H. Zittle, aged about seventy-six years, a well-known resident of Boonsboro', received a severe stroke of paralysis yesterday morning. His entire right side was affected, and he was deprived of the power of speech. Owing to his age and recent enfeebled condition, his affliction is regarded seriously by this family. He is the father of Messrs. Otho and Joseph Zittle, residents of this city." (The Herald and Torch Light, Hagerstown, Maryland, 9 Apr 1885, p. 3, col. 2.)

"ZITTLE.—Thursday, the 16th inst., at his residence in Boonsboro, of paralysis, Mr. Peter H. Zittle, in the 76th year of his age." ("Died," The Herald and Torch Light, Hagerstown, Maryland, 23 Apr 1885, p. 3, col. 5.)

Date of death also recorded in Bible of great-granddaughter Ruth Malinda Roach (née Zittle, formerly Burgess).

Middle name, not known to have been recorded, is assumed to be Henry.

* The nearly 8-year gap between sons Joseph and Otho suggests children who died in infancy.
