William Archie Patterson was born outside of Derma, Mississippi, the son of William and Mollie Patterson. He moved to Arkansas with his family as a teenager. Patterson was called to the ministry in 1921. Later he founded Holy Temple COGIC in Memphis, also it was the first brick church within the Church Of God In Christ. A year later, Mason Temple was built. Patterson pastored Holy Temple for 50 years. He also pastored many churches all through Tennessee including Humboldt and Brownsville. Additionally, he was pastor of New Jerusalem COGIC in Detroit from 1949 until his demise. Bishop Patterson was the father of Presiding Bishop G.E. Patterson (1939-2007) and the brother of J.O. Patterson (1912-1989), who was also Presiding Bishop from 1968 until his demise.
