Polish Statesman. Bierut was called "the Stalin of Poland" after playing a huge role in the Communist Party takeover of Poland after the Second World War. After being influenced by socialist ideas as a youth, he joined the Polish Communist Party in 1918. After his Comintern schooling in Moscow, Bierut was active in various countries such as Bulgaria and Czechosolvakia. After being arrested for his activities, he went to the Soviet Union and stayed there for most of World War II. Bierut returned to Poland at the end of 1943 and started his party's rise to power. He served as President of Poland from 1947 to 1952 and was a loyal backer of the Soviets. To keep the Polish Workers' Party from moving away from the Soviet Union, Bierut dismissed the party secretary and reorganized the party. In 1952 he became prime minister, but he resigned from that position two years later. He passed away while attending the 20th Soviet Communist Party Congress in 1956. It was during this congress where Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev denounced the previous leadership of Joseph Stalin.
