US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served in the US House of Representatives from Pennsylvania for 16 consecutive terms from March 1897 until his death in May 1928. Born in Uwchlan Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, he attended the local common schools, West Chester State Normal School, and Wyer's Academy in West Chester. He then studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1877, and commenced practicing law in West Chester. In 1888 he was appointed judge of the 15th judicial district of Pennsylvania and became an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1889. In 1896 he was elected to Congress in his first term as an Independent Republican and was elected as a Republican for each succeeding term. While in Congress, he was chairman of the US House Committee on Pacific Railroads (59th through 61st Congresses) and member of the US House Committee on Naval Affairs (66th through 70th Congresses). He died in office at the age of 72. He was the father of US Marine Corps two-time Medal of Honor Recipient General Smedley Darlington Butler.
