Oliver was born in Ellenberg, New York, and received his schooling there. The family moved to Phelps County, Nebraska, in the late 1870's. He is shown in Nebraska with his parents on the 1880 Census. He was married to Mary Florence Ludden on 2 October 1882 in Nebraska. The 1885 Nebraska Census shows Oliver with his wife and first two children on a farm in Divide precinct, and they were still living in Nebraska according to the 1900 Census. The couple had four children: Lillie Mabel (10 July 1883-?), Roy Merton (21 November 1884-?), Carl Leslie (26 November 1892-?), and Frances (Frank) Arthur (3 January 1898-?). The couple also adopted Chauncey Crete Chindgren, when his mother, Oliver's sister, Laura Gordon Chindgren died at a young age. After Mary died in 1904, Oliver moved to Colorado. He was remarried to Cora Rowe Barnhart (born 1876 in Illinois) in 1910. He lived in Greeley, Colorado until his death in 1930.
