Arthur Louis Umberger

Services for Arthur Louis Umberger, 88, of Tyler, will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011, at 1:30 p.m. at Stewart Family Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Ray Alden and the Rev. Randy Clay officiating.

Burial will follow at Tyler Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home.

Mr. Umberger passed away Friday, Feb. 4, 2011, at Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler.

He was born Aug. 30, 1922, in Hennessey, Okla., to George Washington and Hattie Gregory Umberger.

Arthur joined the Air Corps at age 18, serving during World War II where he flew 50 missions. He retired as a major after serving 23 years. During his last five years in the Air Force, Arthur served in Panama and flew air-to-sea rescue missions.

On July 9, 1984, he was ordained as a minister. Arthur enjoyed prison ministry and started the Lord's Refuge Church in Tyler 27 years ago.

Arthur was preceded in death by his parents and his sister.

He is survived by his loving family including his wife of 45 years, Jewel Gentry Umberger of Tyler; sons, Cary Kent of Tyler and Art Umberger Jr. and wife Helen of Oregon; grandchildren, Kelley DiSilvestro and husband Tom, Kurtis Kent and wife Jan, Stephanie Thompson and husband Adam, John Kent, Paul Kent, Arin Lynn Umberger and Michelle Umberger; great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and great-niece, Denise Wedel of Madison Park, Okla.

Pallbearers will be Kurtis Kent, John Kent, Paul Kent, Tom DiSilvestro, Jerry Powell and Jaime Arredondo.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Frank Green, Dr. Frank P. Reuter, Randal Gilbert, Victor Fisher, Mike Craig, Adam Thompson and Rusty Matheny.

Visitation is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, at Stewart Family Funeral Home, 7525 Old Jacksonville Highway, Tyler, 75703.

If desired, memorials in honor of Arthur Umberger may be made to The Lord's Refuge, 7206 Pinetree Place, Tyler, 75203.
