Princess of Saxony. Born Maria Anna Ferdinanda as the surviving daughter of the Queen of Portugal Mary II, she married (1859) the Prince of Saxony, future King George I. Considered by contemporaries as a woman of considerable intelligence, during her youth she had a great influence on the life of the Portuguese court being second in line of succession to the throne. However with her marriage she was forced to renounce heir rights also because the surviving brother Luis I contracted marriage (1861) and had two children. Maria Anna died from exhaustion due to the tireless assistance of her son Albert Charles suffering from serious illness.
