On 1 September 1942 Elmer enlisted for service in WW II. He served his country in the 115th Anti-aircraft Artillery Gunnery Battalion until March 21, 1946.

They were the parents of six children.

Elmer F. Gowen, age 44, passed away on Thursday June 10 in the Veterans's Hospital following an extended illness.
He had made his home at Norfolk for the
past 6 years, he had previously resided
at Somerville and Foxboro.
A veteran of World War II, he saw action
for 4 years in the European theater.
For the past 15 years he had been a corrections officer at Norfolk.
He was a member of St. Jude's Holy Name Society; Walpole Post No. 5188 Veteran's of Foreign Wars; Thomas H. Crowley Post No. 104, American Legion; and the Disabled American Veteran's of Norwood.
A Requiem High Mass was sung in St. Jude's Church at Norfolk.
Interment in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
