Cause of death - Cancer.

Elmer and Ethel married on 27 August 1920
at Medford, Middlesex, Massachusetts
They were the parents of four children;
Elmer Furbish, Donald Clifford,
Barbara May, Gerald Charles.

On 26 April 1942 Elmer signed the draft at Concord, Massachusetts for service in WW II.

FAMILY MEMOIRS - Alton Brackett Gowen:

Elmer graduated from Burdett Business College and was employed by various stores as a clerk and office worker in the Boston area.
He served during World War I, taking his training at Camp Devons. Due to his business education, he was put in charge of the army commissary. At the time when service overseas was imminent, the army sent him ahead to set up the commissary pending the arrival of the troops in France.
Returning from the war, he held sundry jobs including several years as a steward on the Savannah Line Ships running between Boston to New York to Savannah. It was during this job that he moved his family to Savannah.
After the death of their son at Savannah,
the family returned to the Boston area.
Elmer then went into the Massachusetts Prison system as a guard at Framington Prison. Later, he was transferred to the Charlestown Prison
as a guard and supervisor.

Elmer F. Gowen, age 55, died Friday in Quigley Memorial Hospital at Chelsea.
He was a resident of Somerville.
He was a retired State Prison guard.
He was a member of Dilboy Post V.F.W.
Requiem Mass at St. Clement's Church.
Interment in St. Joseph Cemetery.
