Born Gwendolyn Green, she worked for twenty-five years as a health aide at the former Willowbrook State School.
"She was a fun person, with a great sense of humor — she loved dancing, and music, especially rhythm and blues," said her daughter, Louise Troia.
One of her favorite hobbies was crocheting hats, gloves, and blankets for her grandchildren.
Mrs. Flanders also enjoyed cooking for her family, playing bingo, and visiting Atlantic City. She was a member of First Central Baptist Church, Stapleton.
Her husband of fifty-five years, Ronald, died in 1997. Her daughter, Yolanda Chase, died in 1993.
In addition to her daughter, Louise, surviving are daughters, Gwendolyn Flanders and Jocelynn Flanders; sons Robert Green and Michael Flanders; sisters, Margaret Dotts and Dorothy Green; brothers, Richard Green and Theodore Nixon; seventeen grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at Martin Hughes Funeral Home in Concord.
Burial will be in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
