Jared Smith Baldwin, the 15 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Baldwin of Hamakuapoko whose critical illness was noted in last week's issue of the News, died about 9am Saturday morning following an operation for appendicitis. The funeral which took place Sunday afternoon, from the Paia church, was very largely attended. The deepest sympathy has been expressed for the bereaved parents by all who knew them, and many of the flags on this island were set at half mast as a token of this feeling. The boy had been somewhat indisposed for several days at Olinda, but on Thursday evening his condition became so alarming that he was hurried to the Paia Hospital and Dr. Judd summoned from Honolulu. The surgeon arrived by special boat the following evening, but his efforts were unavailing. For the past 2 years the deceased had been a student at the Hitchcock Military Academy, at San Rafael, California and had been home for but a few weeks on his vacation. He was a youth of much promise and was a general favorite among his companions and others who knew him
