During the Civil War, John served in the Ambulance Corps of Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of the Southern Confederacy, his enfeebled condition of health preventing a more active participation in the cause which he espoused.
For some years John resided at Baltimore, Maryland, and after wards for more than 20 years he was connected with a mercantile house in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
In the 1880 U.S. Census, John lived in Baltimore City, Maryland, and he was a "dry goods merchant."
Besides several children, John's mother Asburyna, survived him.

Asburyna was the daughter of he daughter of Lt. John Bell Tilden (1761-1838) and Jane (Chambers) Bell. John was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1779, he entered the army as ensign and was at the surrender of Yorktown, where he was appointed to receive the surrendered arms. John died in Virginia.
