A second man to die violently when struck by an automobile in the New Haven area within 24 hours was fatally injured at 5:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon when struck by a car in Chapel Street, near East Street. Police did not hold the driver.
The man, Francis J. McDermott, 52, of 147 Blatchley Avenue, died in the emergency room in New Haven Hospital one hour after the accident. The other persons were treated in the same institution for traffic injuries yesterday.
According to Patrolmen Harold Graves and Howard F. Williams, McDermott met his death when, in crossing the street in front of a moving automobile, he ran directly into the path of a second car which was passing the first one.
Police said, the driver of the car which struck McDermott was Anthony DeNuzzo, 18, of 143 Poplar Street.
Medical Examiner Marvin M. Scarbrough pronounced the death due to the head injury and internal hurts. An autopsy was ordered to be performed on the body today.
Struck, according to police, by a women driver who failed to identify herself and drove off with the remark, "I'm in a hurry," after leaving the youth at the hospital, Claudio Prece, 13, of 466 Legion Avenue, was treated in New Haven Hospital for minor injuries. Police said the boy was riding a bicycle when the car struck him at Oak and York Streets.
John Costa 43 of 1017 Madison Avenue, Bridgeport was treated in the same hospital for minor injuries reported to have been received when a car operated by his brother was involved in a crash in Middletown Turnpike in North Haven.
The first traffic fatality of the 24 hour period immediately preceding McDermott's death was that of Tomasso Creta, 55 of 47 Winthop Avenue, who was killed in East Haven early Sunday night by a hit and run driver for whom East Haven and State Police are still searching.
