Thomas J. Durand, for the past three years living a few miles northeast of Columbia on the Italian Bar road, was found dead in his cabin last Saturday morning by Thomas Garry.

Coroner Burden was promptly notified and the remains were brought to Sonora after an investigation had been made and it had been determined that the death was due to natural causes.

Durand was a pensioner of the government for service as a landsman on the U.S.S. Ohio, Louisiana and North Carolina.

An examination of his correspondence did not reveal the location of any relatives, but disclosed a friend in Victoriaville, Cal., by the name of Ryan. A message was sent to Mr. Ryan in an endeavor to locate the relatives of the deceased, but that gentleman was unable to give any information on that point. He requested that the G.A.R. bury the deceased and that the coroner furnish him with full particulars of Durand's death. The remains were returned to Columbia and interment made in the soldiers' burial plot in the public cemetery.
