Ralph Lovelace was the second son and third child of Lawrence Lovelace and Bessie Neighbors. He was born in 1932 in Bad Axe, Michigan. He moved from Bad Axe to Texas with his parents some time after the 1940 census (which places the family in Verona, near Bad Axe, Michigan) and after a short stay, the family moved on to Oregon, ultimately settling in Coquille.

Ralph married Evelynn Grace [Beebe] Lynn on April 23, 1953 in McPherson, Kansas. He joined the Navy shortly thereafter. He left after his first enlistment, but rejoined just two years later. He remained on active duty, ultimately retiring after his final tour of duty as a recruiter in Mankato, Minnesota. They had four children.

Ralph died of lung cancer in 2001.
