Elnathan Phelps, b. Northampton, Mass., 18 Feb.., 1734, m. 15 Dec., 1757, Eleanor Bridgeman, b. Northampton, Mass., d. Pittsfield, Mass., 1774. He m. 2nd, Sarah Elenthorp, 15 Feb, 1776, the widow of Jacob Elenthorp. She was b. Boston, Mass, 6 April 1743, d. Hopkinton, N.Y., 22 March, 1828, in her 86th year.
Mr. Phelps removed to Pittsfield, Mass., early in its settlement, and shortly after his brother William, and about 1761.
He, with his brother William, and one other Phelps with five others, were the foundation men in the organization of the First Church in Pittsfield, 7 Sept., 1764, and is referred to in the records of Pittsfield in 1781. A committee was chosen to examine into the Shakers, "(they exceeding the bonds of Baptist toleration.)" This committee consisted of the Rev. Mr. Allen, Pastor, and Elders Rathbone, Elnathan Phelps, Eli Root and Woodbridge Little.
Soon after this Mr. Phelps became a Baptist, preaching and organizing Baptist churches. In 1788 he removed to Orwell, Vt., and was the first Baptist preacher in that state, organizing several congregations in that state, and at least one in the state of New York. He died 2 Jan., 1813, in his 80th year, at Pownal, Vt., on his way to Pittsfield, Mass., to visit a son residing there.
