Illinois Governor, U.S. Senator. He graduated from McKendree College, in 1882, earned a law degree from Union College, in 1888 and proceeded to practice law. He entered politics, he served as a member of the Illinois House of Representatives in 1892, served as attorney for the Chicago Sanitary District, (1895-96) and was a Cook County attorney, (1896-1904). In 1904, he was elected as a Republican the 23rd Governor of Illinois, serving as the first Illinois Governor person with two consecutive terms until 1913. During his terms, he advocated for and was successful in securing financial support for higher educational advancements, with furthering improvements in the common schools. Also, the presidential preference primary law was sanctioned in 1912, becoming the first in the nation. After leaving office, he was elected to the U.S. Senate, serving (1925-31). He then resumed the practice of law until his death at age 76.
