RUSSELL T. MAYNARD, SR., went to be with the Lord

Russ was born at
Wilsondale, Wayne County, WV, as the third of four children, to

Zachary Taylor Maynard
and
Melda (Maynard) Maynard, both of whom, with a brother and two sisters, preceded him in death.

Russ was educated in the Wayne County, WV, public schools and majored in "Business Management" at Marshall University, Huntington, WV, Class of 1951.

He also completed several technical courses at the Federal Aviation Academy in Oklahoma City, Okla., as well as at several public universities, where he periodically served as a "guest lecturer" on aviation subjects.

Russ was an ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church, USA, since 1968.

In 1983, he and his wife, Caroline, led a lay group in establishing/chartering the Spotsylvania Presbyterian Church on behalf of the Hanover Presbytery, The Fredericksburg Presbyterian Church, and the Hartwood Presbyterian Church as sponsors.

He also was a former leader in the Boy Scouts of America as well as a member of numerous civic, fraternal, and aviation organizations.

Russ was an eighth generation descendant of William "Mauer," who joined the Virginia Colony in 1740, from Devonshire, England.

He is survived by his widow,
Caroline, with whom he had a "Love Affair" for more than 60 years; also, by

2 Daughters:
C. Gail (Paul) Vadeboncoeur, Spotsylvania County, VA, and
Jennifer (Steve) Tate, Orange County, VA; and

4 Sons:
Robert A. (Barbara) Maynard, Boise, Idaho;
William L.(Leslie) Maynard, North Springfield, VA;
Samuel T. Maynard, Port Townsend, WA; and
David L. (Mary) Maynard, Spotsylvania County, VA.

Russ and Caroline's eldest son,
Russell T. Maynard, Jr., Captain, USAF, perished in a military plane crash in 1978 during the "Cold War."

Russ is also survived by
9 Grandchildren and

3 Great-Grandsons.

Caroline and Russ have always loved each member of the family dearly.

Russ was a combat veteran of World War II, credited with 58 missions over Europe, flying B-24 Liberators. Russ was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for a mission over Germany. He flew more than 65 different types of aircraft during 40 years as a professional pilot.

In 1961, he was issued an Airline Transport Pilot Certificate by the Federal Aviation Administration with "All Ratings Authorized." Only 88 pilots were ever issued such authority.

Prior to his appointment as an Aviation Safety Inspector, he was Chief Operating Officer of a corporation operating an aircraft sales/service and commercial flights for 10 years.

He retired in 1982 from the Federal Aviation Administration in Washington D.C.

A memorial service, with Rev. Dr. Alan Hager officiating, celebrating Russ' life held 7 PM Friday,

Spotsylvania Presbyterian Church

Fredericksburg, VA, with the

Arlington National Cemetery.
