Jasper Napoleon Tincher
Birth: Nov. 2, 1878
Scottsville
Sullivan County
Missouri, USA
Death: Nov. 6, 1951
Hutchinson
Reno County
Kansas, USA

US Congressman. He was born on November 2, 1878, in Scottís Grove, Missouri. He came to Medicine Lodge, Kansas, with his parents in 1892 when he was 15 years old. He passed a teaching exam and taught grade school from 1896 to 1899. Increasingly interested in the law, Tincher then worked and studied in the law offices of Long and Noble in Medicine Lodge. He was admitted to the bar in 1899, and in the same year, at the age of 21, Tincher was elected Barber County Attorney. After serving for one term, he settled into practicing law in Medicine Lodge. The most famous case he ever tried was the divorce suit of the Baptist preacher David Nation against his hatchet-wielding prohibitionist wife, Carey Nation. Nation won his divorce in 1901 thanks to Mr. Tincherís efforts. In 1918 he was elected to Congress from the old Seventh Kansas District. While serving in the House of Representatives, Tincher rose from rank of freshman representative to assistant floor leader. He served as acting chairman of the House during his last term. Tincher left the House in 1927 and moved to Hutchinson, Kansas, to practice law again. But he remained active in national politics, and played an important role in the 1928 Republican National Convention where he became personal friends with Herbert Hoover, the nominee. He was always a lover of horses, and owned a number of them. His favorite recreation was attending race meets where his colts performed. Tincher was admitted to St Elizabethís Hospital in Hutchinson on November 5, 1951, and died there the following day. (bio by: Ron Roberson)
