James E. McDonald, 65, of 2351 Monument Boulevard, Concord, Cal., formerly of Waynesburg, died at 7 a.m. Wednesday, July 27, 1977 at his residence. He had not been in the best of health for some time.

Mr. McDonald was born August 20, 1911, in Mt. Morris, a son of the late William J. and Ella Goodwin McDonald.

His early life was spent in Waynesburg but since 1946 he had resided in California. He was a member of the St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church of Waynesburg.

Mr. McDonald was a veteran of World War II and served in the United States Army in the European Theater of operations. He was a member of the American Legion and the Kiwanis Club, both of El Centro, Calif.

He was a 1931 graduate of Waynesburg High School where he was a four year letterman in football and track. He graduated from Duquesne University in 1935.

Mr. McDonald was the first Waynesburg High School graduate to play professional football, playing fullback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, known then as the Pirates.

In 1945 he moved to Imperial, Cal., where he taught and coached football at Imperial High School.

Following a serious automobile accident, he became employed by the Department of Labor, retiring a few years ago.

Surviving are his widow, Ruth Throckmorton McDonald of Alexandria, Va.; two daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Jacqueline) Camp and Mrs. Geraldine Hebert, both of Walnut Creek, Calif., a son, William S. McDonald of Alexandria, Va.; three granddaughters, Joy, Tamie and Trinina; two grandsons, Tom and Ethan; two sisters, Mrs. Harry (Mary) Snyder and Mrs. Staley (Blanch) Brewer, both of Waynesburg; and a half-brother, W. C. Hey of Meadville.

A son, James, a sister, Jessica, and two brothers, William and John, are deceased.
