---------------------------

John Thomas Figg, who was a native of Bean Blossom Township, was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Dudley Figg and was only two generations removed from some of the pioneer settlers of this section of Monroe County. These ancestors were one of the founding families of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church here and Tom remained a loyal member of that church until it was disbanded.

Mr. Figg graduated from Ellettsville High School on April 11, 1895 and until his death he and Dr. Turley Stephenson of Evanston, Illinois were the only living members of the 1895 class of ten members.

Tom taught school for two years in Bean Blossom Township before devoting his life to farming.

He was one of the moving forces behind the annual Figg Reunion, one of the oldest family gatherings in the state, and had a perfect attendance record for the seventy-nine year-old reunion.

Tom was married to Albertie Elliott on November 3, 1902*** at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Elliott, with the Rev. William Miller officiating at the ceremony. They spent all of their married life in the same home on Route One, Ellettsville in Bean Blossom Township in the Old Dutch neighborhood.

Survivors are two sons, Nelson, Route One, Ellettsville, who is a former trustee of Bean Blossom Township, and Lester, also of Route One, a contractor; two daughters, Mrs. Frances Presley of Indianapolis, former Monroe County Treasurer, and Mrs. Jane (Albert) Kiser of Route One, a church and community leader; twelve grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The body of Mr. Figg was in state at the Greene & Harrell Chapel here.

Printed in The Ellettsville Journal - Ellettsville, Ind. - August 1965

*** It should be noted that Tom's obit contains a mistake. Their wedding date was 3 December 1902 instead of November as it says in the obit.
