** Date of newspaper is not always the date of the incident - this was a weekly, and stories were written, set, and the printing was done after the facts were typeset, often days later.

Chico Weekly Chronicle Record, Saturday, December 21, 1895, pg 1 col 6: A.J. Brown Dead. Taken to His Final Home by Consumption. Founder of the Chico Chronicle and the Honcut Graphic – Exempt Member of Deluge.

Arthur J. Brown, an exempt member of Deluge Hose Company and founder of the Chico Chronicle, before its consolidation with the Butte Record, died yesterday morning at 10:30 o’clock at the home of his mother, corner of Seventh and Ivy. For two years Mr. Brown had been suffering from consumption, and about one month ago he became helpless and was confined to his bed. Since then he rapidly sank until the last came yesterday.

Deceased expected death, and met it bravely. Three days before the end, he named the following persons, all of whom he had worked with in the printing business, as his pall bearers: Charles Small, Joseph Barnes and Frank Morley of the Enterprise, and F.W. Walker, A.B. Collins and Enos Collins of the Chronicle-Record.

Arthur Jeter Brown was born near Palmira [sic], Missouri, January 16, 1855. He resided there until he was fourteen years of age when with his mother he removed to California, locating first in Nevada County. His father, Dr. J.J. Brown, died in 1863. He learned his trade in the office of the Pacific Methodist in San Francisco.

In 1880 Mr. Brown established the Chico Chronicle and conducted it in a successful manner until 1887, when the Chronicle was consolidated with the Butte Record under the name of the Chronicle-Record. He also founded the Honcut Graphic in 1890.

As a journalist Mr. Brown was popular and while he enjoyed good health, he was a successful financier, but poor health broke him down. He resided with his mother, Mrs. E.J. Brown, and Father Leaman, his grandfather, who, though ninety-two years of age, outlived him.

While in Chico deceased took an active interest in public matters, and was an exempt member of Deluge Hose Company.

The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon from the family residence on Seventh street, the services to be conducted by Rev. C.O. Steele.

It was the wish of Mr. Brown that the Deluge Hose Company attend his funeral, and no doubt they will be present in a body, and many of the other firemen will also attend.

Chico Weekly Chronicle Record, Saturday, December 21, 1895, pg 3 col 3: Funeral of A.J. Brown. Attended by Many Friends and the Firemen.

The funeral of the late Arthur J. Brown was held yesterday afternoon at the residence of his mother, corner of Seventh and Ivy at 2 o’clock, and was quite largely attended.

Besides a large gathering of friends, all the fire companies were present in uniform, to do honor to one who had been an earnest and faithful worker in the department for many years.

Devoted friends had appropriately decorated the interior of the home for the sad ceremony.

Rev. C.O. Steele, pastor of the South Methodist Church conducted the services, and in a brief sermon reviewed the life of the deceased and spoke words of sympathy for the bereaved relatives.

The pall bearers consisted of three members of the Fire Department and three from the newspaper offices, they being L.A. Jackson, J.P. Curry and James Chubbuck, and F.W. Walker, A.B. Collins and Joseph Barnes.

Father Leaman, grandfather of the deceased was unable to attend the brief services at the cemetery.
